Muscle Is Health Capital. Here Is What It Buys You.

We plan for retirement with spreadsheets and almost never plan for the body that has to live through it. Skeletal muscle is not decorative tissue. It is the largest organ system you have, it helps govern how your body handles glucose, and it predicts long-term survival better than the measurement your doctor has been tracking for decades. Here is the case for treating muscle as an asset, and the second lever almost no one talks about.

There are two ways to be seventy, and everyone reading this has watched both.

One person is still hiking the trail they have always hiked. They pick up a grandchild without thinking about it. They travel, and the travel is the point rather than the obstacle. The other has started planning around their body. Stairs get considered in advance. Someone else carries the bag. The circle of what is comfortable draws in a little each year, and no one announces it, least of all them.

The gap between those two people is rarely luck and rarely genetics alone. A great deal of it comes down to two things that erode with age and respond, remarkably well, to being defended.

Muscle Is Not Cosmetic. It Is Capital.

Muscle gets filed under appearance. It belongs to your twenties, to athletes, to people with time for the gym. Once the career gets busy and the birthdays accumulate, muscle drops out of the health conversation entirely and gets replaced by something vaguer about staying active.

That filing error is expensive, because skeletal muscle is metabolically active around the clock. It is the largest organ system in the body. It supports balance and mobility. It holds the amino acid reserve your body draws on during illness, injury, and surgery. It is central to how you handle glucose. And it releases compounds during contraction that communicate with the brain, liver, and immune system, which is why researchers describe muscle as a secretory organ rather than simply a mechanical one.1

Muscle does not only respond to your health. It participates in producing it.

The sharpest illustration comes from a 2014 analysis in the American Journal of Medicine. Researchers followed more than 3,600 adults and found that muscle mass index tracked more closely with long-term survival than body mass index did.2 The number the health system has leaned on for half a century turned out to be the weaker predictor of the two.

Which is why I have stopped calling muscle a fitness goal and started calling it capital. You accumulate it, you protect it, and the return it pays is the width of the life you get to live at seventy.

Decline Does Not Arrive All at Once. It Accumulates.

People describe aging as though it happened on a particular Tuesday. It does not. It compounds, in the same direction, for years.

Adults begin losing muscle mass from around the third decade of life, at a rate the literature commonly describes as roughly three to eight percent per decade, with the pace increasing in later years.3 That is slow enough to go entirely unremarked until ordinary things start feeling different. The jar lid that will not turn. The staircase that takes something out of you. The suitcase that goes overhead with a little more effort than it did last year.

None of those is a health event. Twenty years of them is the difference between the two seventy-year-olds.

Ordinary strength after 40

Functional strength is not measured in the gym. It is measured in what you never have to think twice about.

There is a second reason this gets harder with age, and it is the one that frustrates the people who are already doing the work. Research on protein and muscle repair has found that older adults require a greater relative protein intake than younger adults to produce a comparable muscle-building response.4 The same meal, the same shake, the same training session does not land the way it once did.

That is not a failure of discipline. It is a change in biology, and biology does not respond to more willpower. It responds to being fed correctly for the body you are in now.

The Second Lever Almost No One Talks About

Muscle, protein, and training are one half of this. They are also, almost exclusively, the half the wellness industry sells.

The other half is invisible. Every contraction, every stair climbed, every night your body spends repairing a hard session depends on mitochondria converting nutrients into usable energy. That conversion runs on a molecule called NAD+, which sits at the center of cellular energy metabolism.

NAD+ concentrations in human tissue decline with age.5 As they fall, cells get less efficient at producing the energy everything else is drawing on. A good deal of what people experience as the fatigue and the longer recovery of getting older traces back to that decline.

Muscle is the machinery. Cellular energy is the current that runs it. Machinery with no current sits idle. Current with nothing to run has nowhere to go. After 40, both are changing at the same time, which is why defending one and ignoring the other leaves you working at half capacity no matter how consistent you are.
